My opinion on Twitter rebranding to X

The death of the bird but the rise of the letter.

My overall opinion on Twitter’s Rebrand to X

I have a love-hate relationship with Elon’s decision to rebrand X.

I am personally mainly not a fan of it as we have all known the platform as Twitter for years.

We have all used terms such as Tweeting and Retweeting, which flowed really well.

It just doesn’t feel the same saying ‘Posting an X’ or ‘ReXing’.

I am a fan though of X being “the everything app”.

Elon Musk’s Obsession With The Letter X

Elon Musk at Paypal/X.com (1999) - From the Associated Press

Elon Musk has had an obsession with X for decades, even PayPal was destined to be called X; and I guess Twitter/X is Elon’s very own platform now, no matter who the CEO is (as Linda Yaccarino is the CEO now).

The only part I like is that it signifies Twitter’s Elon era, by him really making it his own (as he tends to do).

That means it also signifies the start of most things being behind paywalls with Twitter/X’s Blue subscription and the absence of the free verified checkmark for notable people (Very bad idea as it opens up room for impersonators).

The least Elon could do is to make a new checkmark with a different colour for notable people; but I guess not having a free checkmark for celebs slightly decreases the intense ego a lot of them have, so it may be a win 😅.

It does look like impersonators are getting banned very quickly, which is a very good sign and a good job from Twitter/X’s moderation team.

On the bright side, Elon has opened up more free-speech opportunities for Twitter/X compared to the previous team that ran the platform that heavily censored people who had an opinion that was different to theirs.

It is still really sad to “bid adieu”

to the twitter bird while replacing it with a single letter just because Elon loves it.

Some Humour

While the rebrand was full on trending on Twitter, many people linked the term ‘X’ to a pretty naughty reason… adult/porn sites.

Xvideos (please do NOT search it up, it WILL show full on porn) was probably the most prominent meme that surfaced twitter during it’s rebrand process, as people were correlating both the adult site and videos from X, if you get what I mean. The good ol’ internet.

Even Indonesia temporarily banned the specific site x.com (redirects to twitter) during the rebrand as the letter X is commonly used in adult/pornographic sites.

Who made the logo?

Well, technically the ‘logo’ was made by Monotype as it is featured in Monotype’s Special Alphabet 4 as a glyph in a font and in Unicode.

Elon most definitely would have rights to this… or else he would have been sued by now.

Conclusion

I honestly don’t mind the rebrand (doesn’t mean I like it, because I don’t), but it is going to take quite a bit of getting used to. I will probably continue to combine the old and new name with a slash in between (Twitter/X) to refer to Twitter whenever I talk about it.

Some features such as the verified checkmark should possibly/possibly not stay free for notable people who are prone to being impersonated for malicious reasons.

The new terms replacing ‘Tweeting’ and ‘Retweeting’ will definitely not sound as good on the tongue (hence why it seems like Elon is keeping those terms for now).

It signifies Elon’s era of Twitter/X.

He didn’t make the logo as it was already in Unicode, but he definitely has rights to it.

He absolutely adores the letter X.
